My top 7 favourite movies of 2024

Last year, I watched more movies than ever before! Though I’ve always loved movies, my usual pace was about one movie a month. But this year was different. I found the time, the mental space, and an amazing partner to join me in exploring a variety of films. Together, we experimented with movies spanning genres, languages, and eras.

For the first time, I stepped out of my comfort zone and gave horror, horror-comedy, and romantic movies in other languages a chance—something I’d never have done on my own.

Interestingly, series used to dominate our meal times. But this year, we swapped them for movies. Our routine? Start a movie during one meal, pause it, and resume it at the next. Of course, some films were so captivating that we ended up watching them all at once. But more often, we enjoyed them in parts, savoring the experience.

Since I’ve watched so many movies this year, I thought I’d share my favorites. Most of them are Indian movies, as you’ll see.

Now, let me clarify: I’m no film critic, nor do I claim to know the intricacies of filmmaking. I’m just a simple girl-next-door listing my favourites reserved by my own judgements, taste and preferences.  So, here’s my list:

1. Kishkindha Kaandam

A simple story turned into a brilliant thriller. With just three main characters, the narrative skillfully weaves twists and turns that keep you guessing. The film is tightly knit and keeps your curiosity alive throughout. The climactic reveal ties all the puzzle pieces together, showcasing emotions, perspectives, and misinterpretations of characters. If you enjoy slow-burn thrillers, I would recommend this movie.

2. Lubber Pandhu

A feel-good entertainer that hit all the right notes for me. It beautifully balances emotions, humor, love, and drama. What stood out were the distinct character arcs and the way women’s voices were portrayed—strong, nuanced, and authentic. The film’s simplicity and subtle emotional cues made it a standout. This is one of those rare gems I’d happily rewatch anytime.

3. Avesham

I have to admit—I’m a big fan of Fahadh Faasil. His effortless acting and screen presence always draw me in, and Avesham was no exception. This film presented him in a new light, portraying a character whose strength on the outside contrasts with his inner insecurities. Packed with mass moments, catchy songs, humor, and action, it delivered a wholesome theater experience. The crowd’s energy definitely added to the fun!

4. Meiyazhagan

This one was a very heartwarming film. With two iconic stars pulling off their roles so naturally, the movie exuded love, kindness, and innocence. Watching it was like visiting my ancestral home during summer vacation and reconnecting with relatives. It celebrated life’s simple joys and the beauty of human connections. The realistic locations and heartwarming characters made it even more special.

5. Manjummel Boys

A real-life survival story that highlights the power of friendship. Although I knew the climax beforehand, the journey was so emotional and gripping. The music elevated the entire experience, and one iconic track played at a pivotal moment (in the breathtaking Guna caves) was a perfect goosebumps moments. Watching this in a theater made it all the more impactful.

6. Amaran

A very heartfelt movie bringing to light the life of an army man who laid down his life during his duty. I felt this film captured both the professional and family life of army personnel beautifully. The longing of the family members, the intense duty at the borders, and how these two connect is the very essence of the movie, and it struck the right chords organically. I watched the movie in theaters, and I could see how the majority of the audience were left in tears at the end—and this happened despite us knowing what was going to happen.

7. Laapataa Ladies

A strong story with a great message, delivered in an inspiring and engaging manner. The characters were beautifully developed, the scenes were lively, and the emotions were captured really well. What I loved was the positivity exuding from almost all the characters. It brought a smile to my face with its heartwarming climax and how the characters adapted despite changes in their original circumstances.

These are my favorites from this year—movies that left me smiling, emotional, or awestruck. What are some of your favorite films from 2024? I’d love to hear your recommendations!
