Routines are easier said than done

Routines are easier said than done

Yes, I’ve been advocating routines and habits for a while now. But if you’ve ever tried sticking to one, you’ll know how difficult it really is. Demanding schedules, endless distractions, emotional ups and downs — there are so many factors that pull us away from maintaining a routine.

Every habit-building book or influencer talks about being regular and consistent — until the habit becomes muscle memory. But honestly, it’s easier said than done.

There are a few things I wish to bring into my daily life: sleeping at a reasonable hour, eating light, exercising, and walking more. But then, life happens — and all these simple wishes suddenly start to feel like a luxury.

Here are some of the instances where I find my routine slipping away without even realizing it:

1. Social commitments

When I get invited to a dinner party, it usually starts late and goes on till midnight. I want to maintain my social life and be with friends, but saying no every time doesn’t feel right either.

2. Craving change

Every now and then, my mind craves variety. I want to travel, explore a new place, or just do something different. But that often throws my schedule off balance — my sleep, workouts, and even meal patterns change.

3. Distractions

One ping of a notification, “just one” scroll through social media, or a single episode of a series — it’s never just one. I get pulled into a whirlpool of distractions that takes several minutes (sometimes hours) to recover from.

4. Emotional waves

My emotions can be unpredictable. One day, I’m charged up to take on the world; the next, I can’t seem to gather the energy to do anything. I know consistency could help smooth these fluctuations, but the journey feels harder than I expected.

Lately, I’ve been wondering if my mindset itself is part of the problem — an all-or-nothing approach that tells me missing one day means I’ve failed completely. When I try to overhaul my lifestyle all at once, I end up showing up for nothing.

Maybe the key isn’t about being perfect but being persistent. Perhaps routines aren’t meant to restrict us but to anchor us, gently — even when life pulls us in different directions. I’m still learning to find that balance.

good. U cannot have 100 percent.

however, we can aim to come closure there, every time pulling us back to what we want to do
